I first met Mark Griffin during the summer of 2006 at the Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, Illinois. Out of the 25,000 people at the festival that year, we just happened to set up camp next to each other. We immediately hit it off just because we had the same weird love of Christian rock bands from the late 80′s and 90′s. Late one night while talking I learned that he was trying to develop a web site for the school that he worked at in Taiwan. After discussing exactly what he wanted in a site, I suggested that he build the site based upon a Content Management System. He fell in love with the idea and asked me to help him make it happen. We did, and shortly thereafter all of the other Morrison Christian Academy schools had adopted not only the Joomla! technology, but also the simple design template that he and I had developed together.

Fast forward to 2011, and with his summer vacation quickly approaching, Mark again reached out to me to see what ideas I had about a site upgrade and redesign. We had four primary objectives: (1) upgrade the Joomla! CMS from version 1.0 to the most current version, (2) upgrade to a fresh and modern design template, (3) streamline the site navigation, and (4) make a site that multiple teachers and staff could easily add new content to. I believe we have accomplished all four, but the best part of the entire process was reconnecting with a good friend!

Amy L. Marxkors is a marathoner and a brand spanking new author of a book titled “The Lola Papers.” We ran into each other at Kaldi’s Coffee one day this past summer and just started talking. She told me some fanciful tale of getting into the VIP area during the St. Louis Rams Spring Training Camp and of chillin’ with the players wives, girlfriends, team owners, etc. Eventually we started discussing her book, and I just naturally slipped a few web site and marketing ideas her direction; she brushed me off (like most cute girls). But then, a few months later she called me up to discuss the possibilities of getting a site up and running as a continuation of her The Lola Papers series (which happened to start in the Fleet Feet St. Louis email newsletter).

In developing Amy’s site, our goals were really simple and straight forward – we wanted a site that was (1) unique in design when compared with other author’s sites, (2) portrayed the fun-loving personality of “Lola,” and (3) was easy to read and navigate. You can tell from the imagery that we had a lot of fun putting this thing together!

Having spent ten years volunteering as the infamous “Bullseye” for a camp for children with cancer, the opportunity to work with Traci and Sandy was pretty much a no-brainer for me. The initial plan for the Leaps of Love site was actually very basic – develop a site where the organization could easily post new articles on the home page (blog style), display a calendar of upcoming events, and provide online donation abilities. After just six months of use it became evident that site needed to be more flexible, content needed to be easier to navigate and find, the calendar “prettier,” and it just needed to be easier to make a donation. The great thing about building site on a CMS platform is the ease of making these types of adjustments without affecting the content already in place; it’s scalable. And the wonderful thing for me (the web guy) is this… The organization can add, edit, and delete content without getting yours truly involved! Now how’s that for efficiency?
